Many years ago when I was a junior newspaper reporter, a very experienced TV journalist told me he never voted. He said having an opinion on politics would undermine his ability to report impartially.
This month writer-turned University regulator Toby Young resigned from the Office for Students, because of comments he made as a self-styled “journalistic provocateur”.
It got me thinking… Most of us journalists have opinions (just listen to us sounding forth in the pub, or espresso bar). We may have to button up and keep them to ourselves sometimes. But should we be neutral no matter what?
